Intro

Shoebox under the bed, corner torn like a wound,

paper curling like smoke from a stove in the room.

Miss Odell ran a tab when the fridge kept us starving,

wrote it in pencil, said pay me when you're carving.

Cousin Trey slid me bus fare, wrinkled and green,

said get to school, kid, don't end up like me.

Coach fronted the fee when my sneakers had holes,

said run it back double, never asked for control.

I kept every scrap like a debt that don't fade,

filed under names of the people who stayed.

Odell's store closed down, gate rusted and chained,

Trey's obituary folded, ink barely stained.

Coach moved to Georgia, phone number disconnected,

but the ledger in my chest still keeps them collected.

I can't Venmo a ghost, can't wire the dead,

so I carry the balance instead in my head.

Every name got a page, every page got a debt,

and the interest keeps climbing on what I ain't paid yet.
