Scars in the Same Spot Twice

Intro

Same fence, different year, same rust on the wire

I still know the sound it makes before it bites

Verse

Twelve years old, Denton Street, chain-link caught my arm

Ran from Twitchy's dog through the yard behind the barn

Split it clean above the wrist, mama poured the peroxide

Said keep your sleeves down, boy, till the summer decide

I kept that scar like a zipper, pink against the brown

Forgot about the fence till the fence came back around

Twenty-four years old, same block, same iron teeth

Pulled my cousin Miles through the gap up underneath

Same spot on my arm split open, wider this time

Blood on the same line like the skin remembers rhyme

Miles was running from something older than that dog

Older than the debt, older than the fog

I didn't ask questions, just grabbed and I pulled

Felt the sting come back like the wound was full

Two decades apart, same fence, same red seam

The block don't forget you, it just changes the scene

Hook

Scars in the same spot twice

Same skin, same price

Block keep testing the seam

Where I already bled once, I bleed

Verse

Miles is nineteen now, got the same crooked jaw

Same walk his daddy had before the county called the law

I taught him the shortcut through the lot behind the church

Told him mind the fence, boy, that thing will make you search

For skin you didn't know you'd miss until it's torn

Told him about my arm, the night that dog was born

Into a myth on the block, how the fence got its name

How everybody's got one spot that catches the same

Flame of trouble twice, like the street's got a memory

Filed under scars, cross-referenced by family

I watched him climb it clean, no rust, no delay

Watched the wound skip him like a debt he didn't pay

Maybe that's the difference, maybe that's the trade

One generation bleeds so the next one gets made

Different, safer, still careful where they stand

Still checking the same fence with a steadier hand

Hook

Scars in the same spot twice

Same skin, same price

Block keep testing the seam

Where I already bled once, I bleed

Bridge

Doctor asked me once why it never healed right

I said some cuts stay open to keep the porch light

On for whoever's still running through that yard

Said the mark ain't the wound, boy, the mark is the guard

Standing where the fence stood before it came down

The city took the lot but I still hear the sound

Outro

Same spot, same skin, still standing on the seam

Whatever comes back looking, it already knows me
