The Weight of Water (Version 2)

Verse

The old pipe rattles in the wall

Your comb's still hanging by the sink

I fold your scarf against my chest

Like it might bring back all of this

Fourteen years, four seasons gone

And I'm holding on to what is left

Not you or me but something in between

This life we built and lost and made whole again

You said goodbye right here at the door

Left me standing with nothing more

Than a handful of dust and one small key

A reminder of where we used to be

Pre-Chorus

So tell me what's left of you and me

Tell me who I'm supposed to turn out to be

Chorus

I've got the weight of water in my hands

The weight of everything that fell apart in your plans

I'll carry it all the way down the river bend

Because that's where the stories never end

This is how I keep you here with me

In every drop and every memory

You were always carried to the sea

Verse

Your silver necklace, your favorite book

The photograph we took on a warm wet summer hook

I keep these things because they feel like part of what's true

A ghost of something that was real enough to you

Some people say I should let go and move along

But every piece of you is too heavy for me to throw away

And so I'm holding on, I'm holding on

To the way it felt when we had a home to call our own

Pre-Chorus

So tell me what's left of you and me

Tell me who I'm supposed to turn out to be

Chorus

I've got the weight of water in my hands

The weight of everything that fell apart in your plans

I'll carry it all the way down the river bend

Because that's where the stories never end

This is how I keep you here with me

In every drop and every memory

You were always carried to the sea

Bridge

Maybe this isn't about keeping it at all

Maybe it's about not losing your ghost in the fall

Every single thing you left behind

Is a door that keeps swinging open in my mind

I don't need to find my own way now

Because you showed me how to hold on through the rough and the slow

Chorus

I've got the weight of water in my hands

The weight of everything that fell apart in your plans

I'll carry it all the way down the river bend

Because that's where the stories never end

This is how I keep you here with me

In every drop and every memory

You were always carried to the sea

Outro

And so I carry on and on

Through the tide, through the sand, until we're home again
